E-learning consultant Jane Hart produces a Top 100 of online or computer-based tools for learning, many of which are freely available. This spring's update is based on the contributions of 155 e-learning professionals who submitted their top 10 tools. Of course, e-learning professionals are not your typical learners but have a look - it's really eye-opening what you can do these days. If you have any questions about the tools or how they might be used, don't hesitate to get in touch with Mira Vogel, Sonja Grussendorf or John Phelps.

Here's the Top 10 (and they're all either free or free to Goldsmiths academics):
  1. del.icio.us (online bookmarking - in my opinion Diigo is much better though)
  2. The Firefox browser
  3. Google Reader (gives an overview of article titles from news and journal sites you sign up to - no more bitty email alerts)
  4. Skype - online telephony and video conferencing, good for e.g. supervision sessions at a distance
  5. Google search engine
  6. Wordpress - the open source blogging application, which you can either host yourself or use hosted for free.
  7. PowerPoint
  8. Googlemail (aka Gmail) email which organises your email radically differently - by thread as well as chronology
  9. Audacity - the open source sound editor and recorder, good for desktop podcasting.
  10. Blogger, Google's blogging tool
By the way - always acquaint yourself with the terms, conditions and privacy policies of any online service you use.
