learn.gold written on the beach in sandPlease don't start on next year's course areas until you have read this!

Learn.gold changed on 23 July 2018

Each year we upgrade learn.gold to the latest version of the Moodle software. This year the upgrade to Moodle 3.5 brought some notable improvements:

  • a much more prominent login box (the first thing you see now is the login prompt)
  • a clearer, easier to use layout with better typography
  • better experience on mobile apps
  • a better dashboard with in-progress and previous tabs
  • course areas now have a start and end date
  • easier access to materials from previous years
  • grades default to zero decimal places for new course areas
  • students automatically added to their taught modules or programme areas (depending on dept preference)
  • create multiple groups (or even enrol students) from a csv
  • an impoved and more flexible assignment activity (with Turnitin as an option)
  • easy webcam capture within the editor (note: doesn't work with Safari)
  • restructured categories with departments at the top level
  • forum discussion posts now sent within 5 minutes
  • introductory 'tours' of the new theme (the look and feel)

Work happening over the next week or two

On the TODO list are the following, note that this will not interrupt the normal working of the site:

  • Restructuring of the categories with Departments at the top level, then years
  • Student and Staff induction and help areas

Feedback sessions

We had some really useful comments in the learn.gold survey (March) and the demonstration/consultation sessions throughout May. Thanks to all who contributed. We hope the new version addresses most of your concerns.

Further sessions and workshops in August and September

We'll be advertising a number of events shortly for you to experience the new learn.gold and work on your course areas with help on hand.
